Trystane is the second child of Doran and his estranged wife, Mellario of Norvos, born some years after his eldest sister Arianne Martell as well as being Doran's only son. This made Trystane the prince of Dorne upon his birth yet per tradition of his homeland he was not made the heir immediately upon his birth, rather he is second in line after his older sister who has remained the heiress. Likewise, Trystane is one of the only male offspring born to the siblings of Elia, Doran, and Oberyn next to his cousin, Aegon.

Growing up in Dorne, especially the royal line of House Martell, life was rather unique. Trystane's upbringing was rather full of what you would expect for a prince including various studies, learning the ins and outs of politics and the culture of his home, understanding those under their banner, and various other expectations and activities. Most of all, he was taught that family always came first and foremost, no matter what may be going on. Many of his lessons coincided with that of Arianne, primarily to ensure both siblings understood the importance of running Dorne as well as knowing the ins and outs of dealing with the other houses. However, Trystane and his sister were often at odds in their childhood, both having very different personalities and how they tackled situations, something of which also extended to his bastard cousins, the Sand Snakes, whom he has developed something of a rivalry with. In fact, since he was young Trystane was noted to be more like his father in terms of habits and appearance while his sister was remarked to be more like their mother and uncle, the former of which left Dorne sometime when Trystane was still a young boy.

Nevertheless, Trystane was healthy and has always been noted to be quick witted and smart, despite the whispers that he had a weak-will and was more of a pushover than his elder sister. Where his sister had her place very well established, Trystane had more freedom to explore his role in House Martell, taking something more of a scholarly, diplomatic role, often being found reading books and scrolls available in Dorne or in his travels to playing hours upon hours of cyvasse since he was young. Much of this also was spent traveling with his father or his uncle to the many corners of their home or to King's Landing, visiting their surviving family as well as curiously exploring other cultures of Westeros. Although, if anyone were to ask Trystane will always choose Dorne's culture over any other, feeling they are far more free and flexible than most of the rest of the Seven kingdoms, but this has not changed his insatiable curiosity to the realms beyond Dorne, having entertained the thought of traveling the realms to expand his views. During one such trip through the Red Mountains, Trystane came across a lone Shadowcat cub finding no signs of its mother even after waiting a few days. So, the young prince adopted it, naming it Nymero after his ancestor the warrior-queen Nymeria.

Growing up, while the young prince was more interested in scholarly and mental activities, he was by no means a stranger to growing up with combat, being trained from a young age by a few trainers as well as his uncle Oberyn. This led to a bigger rivalry between himself and his cousins, often taking part in various spars and matches against the Sand Snakes to test his mettle. Unfortunately, Trystane has yet to ever win against his cousins, but it can be seen that with each match he seems to learn quickly and seeks ways to improve his combat abilities to even today. Though his abilities are often questioned due to being much like his father, Trystane has more than proven himself a capable member of House Martell over the years, and with coming of age is well aware he'll be expected to find a proper match to strength his family and their standing.

Who the young prince will pick to be at his side is one of the more anticipated announcements in Dorne as much as it is for Arianne's.
