Laena was born on Driftmark, being one of three children to the late Lord of the Tides, Monford Velaryon, and Lady of Driftmark, Valaena Velaryon, being their middle child and the oldest daughter. Sometime after Monterys turned two, Laena was born at the height of the summer months, an easy birth for her mother Valaena and an equally easy child to raise in her younger years.
Prior to her tenth nameday, Laena always seemed like a curious, easy-going young girl, spending a majority of her years raised on the shores of Driftmark surrounded by nursemaids, servants, and family alike. Her cunning and intelligence shined brightly even when she was young, always watching, observing, and learning, being playful, quick-witted, and learned to a little manipulative from a young age to get in favor of her parents and those serving House Velaryon, usually for her favorite treats, foods, and toys. Yet, she was equally sharp and attentive during her lessons as she got older, learning everything from traditional duties of a lady such as sewing, dancing, etiquette, etc. to reading, writing, history, and navigating via the stars and sun. When not busy with her lessons, Laena would often be found running around the halls of Driftmark, playing with her siblings and family, finding ways to entertain herself, or playing with and greeting guests.
However, shortly after her tenth nameday, Laena's life began to take an interesting, and at one point tragic, twist. Her world began to open up more and more away from Driftmark and Hightide, being brought along with her family on more ventures around the peninsula, the Stepping Stones, going as far as King's Landing and Dragonstone where she was presented at court for the first time. Perhaps the most striking feature that caught the eye of others was Laena's mesmerizing eyes and being already considered quite a pretty young girl, which only blossomed as she aged. From that first step into court, to the present, Laena became a regular appearance, befriending other ladies at court including those of the Targaryen royal family of whom were already close to the family including with the betrothal of Princess Rhaenys to her brother. It is in court that Laena began to show herself to be more and more like her mother, being playful and manipulative, making use of her beauty to flirt with and get to know the lords and ladies that so often graced the halls of King's Landing and Dragonstone, her own little way of getting to know potential allies and enemies. Her own way to decipher whom she could call friend and who to keep at arms-length.
When not partaking in court, Laena often secluded herself to the Godswood when she ventured there once out of curiosity, allowing her to recenter herself and have some alone time for quiet and tranquility. For the most part, Laena knew mostly peace and was more than capable of playing the game of politics as taught to her by Valaena, more so with her lack of desire to marry at first. But, things changed at the loss of her father causing Monterys to take his role as Lord of the Tides, and her mother to take a greater role in running and maintaining Driftmark and Hightide. It always brought Laena to the reality that sooner or later, she would have to forego her desires for marriage and knows sooner or later she will have to find a close match, something of which her and her mother both have been picky about, turning down many a suitor who sought to have the beauty of Driftmark at their side. Likewise, Laena got the idea to try something not done by many in her house in quite sometime: claiming a dragon.
When she next went to King's Landing, she proclaimed her desire to claim one of the riderless dragons, a claim that made many nervous but was nonetheless granted, being taken down to the pits to observe those yet to be claimed. One young she-dragon caught her eye, a female dragon of dark cobalt and beaten copper no larger than twice the size of a horse, social but docile yet a fierce look in her lighter copper eyes. It is with this dragon, Tessarion, Laena bonded with and took her first flight that same day, flying Tessarion back to Driftmark later that day. Since then, Laena has taken a more active role in watching over and defending her home, as well as a further stand to show the strength of House Velaryon while seeking her best match in the coming uncertain times.
